In March of 2012 the Canadian government cut Katimavik, a volunteer program that has empowered over 30, 000 youth since 1977 - participants spend six months in two different Canadian communities where they develop leadership skills, learn a second language, and volunteer in the community

On April 2nd 2012 the Canadian government went against the original 2013 contract extension they established with Katimavik. This decision has left 600 Canadian youth stranded
